Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell announced that a Yavapai County Grand Jury has indicted Prescott Police Officer Brian Sutton on one count of manslaughter. The case was submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office by the Yavapai County Attorney’s Office on September 3, 2024, due to a conflict of interest.

The indictment relates to an incident in June 2024 involving Officer Sutton and Daniel Leslie. During the encounter outside Leslie’s home, he ran towards his house unarmed when Officer Sutton discharged his service weapon. Leslie was hit and later died at the hospital. The Department of Public Safety conducted the criminal investigation.

“A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.”
