Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport announced on Apr. 20 that it will recognize its volunteers during Volunteer Appreciation Week, which takes place from April 22 to April 28. The airport’s volunteer program is considered a key part of guest service at the facility.

The recognition highlights the contributions of several groups, including Navigators, Navigator Buddies, Teen Navigators, and Navigator Chaplains. These volunteers help travelers with directions and information and provide support throughout the airport. Since the program began in 2000, more than 1,800 volunteers have given over 1.7 million hours of service at Phoenix Sky Harbor.

Navigator Buddies bring therapy dogs into the terminal for passengers to interact with accredited animals. Teen Navigators are high school students who volunteer alongside experienced Navigators during summer months. Navigator Chaplains offer spiritual comfort and guidance to those who seek it.

ā€œAll volunteers play an essential role in maintaining the high standards of America’s Friendliest Airport,ā€ said Deputy Aviation Director for Public Relations Heather Shelbrack. ā€œTheir dedication, compassion and service help ensure that millions of travelers each year feel welcome and supported from the moment they arrive at Phoenix Sky Harbor.ā€

This year’s Volunteer Appreciation Week will feature a sports-themed celebration honoring Navigators as Most Valuable Players (MVPs). Activities include sharing memorable moments and travel tips for PHX guests. Members of the executive team will also shadow a Navigator to experience firsthand how volunteers assist travelers every day.

Recent developments at Phoenix Sky Harbor include Breeze Airways’ announcement on August 10, 2022 that it would begin offering flights from Phoenix to Charleston, South Carolina and Provo, Utah twice weekly starting November 2 from Terminal 3 according to a statement by Breeze Airways Chief Operating Officer Michael Wuerger. In addition, Roxann Favors was named Assistant Director/Chief Revenue Officer for the City of Phoenix Aviation Department in August 2022 as reported by city officials, while Jay DeWitt was appointed Assistant Director/Chief Development Officer overseeing several divisions within the department according to city announcements.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport reports an annual economic impact exceeding $44 billion. On average each day about 1,300 aircraft operate at PHX with more than 140,000 passengers arriving or departing.
