The Phoenix Police Department has released a Critical Incident Briefing video that details an officer-involved shooting which took place on September 2, 2025, near 17th Avenue and Tonto Street.
According to police, the incident began when Special Assignment Unit (SAU) officers were executing a search warrant as part of another ongoing investigation. Officers announced themselves at the door, knocked, and then started to force entry. As they opened the door, a man inside fired shots at the officers. One SAU officer returned fire and injured the man.
Two other men exited the apartment without injury and were detained by police. The injured individual also left the apartment, was taken into custody by officers, received medical assistance on scene, and was transported to a hospital by the Phoenix Fire Department with life-threatening injuries.
Police stated that “the man is currently receiving treatment at the hospital for injuries he received and will be booked on related charges when he is released.” A handgun believed to have been used by the shooter was found inside the apartment.
The officer who discharged his weapon is assigned to the Special Assignments Unit and has over 17 years of service with Phoenix Police Department.
This case is being investigated criminally by the Major Incident Division of the Arizona Department of Public Safety and will also be reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. An administrative investigation is being conducted internally by Phoenix Police Department as well.
“Conclusions about whether the actions of the officers are consistent with department policy and the law will not be made until all facts are known and the investigation is complete,” according to officials.
