Paris Johnson Jr.’s return to health signifies a pivotal moment for the Arizona Cardinals as they commence their offseason training. Previously sidelined due to a knee injury sustained in Week 15 against the Patriots, Johnson is now fully recovered. “I haven’t had the issue ever,” Johnson remarked, highlighting his prior record of uninterrupted play throughout high school and college. “It’s part of the game and it happens, unfortunately.”
This offseason carries particular significance for Johnson. Having switched positions from right to left tackle last season, this year marks his first opportunity in over a decade to play the same position in consecutive seasons. At 23, Johnson aspires to demonstrate his growth and potential. “I’m trying to show the world that it’s time for me to make the jump and be the best version of myself,” he stated. “And I believe the best version of myself is as one of the best tackles in the game. Now it’s time to show it.”
Despite the setback, Johnson delivered a commendable performance last season, becoming a Pro Bowl alternate. He played a key role in the team’s offensive line, enabling running back James Conner to rush for over 1,000 yards for the second consecutive season.
The Cardinals’ offseason program has introduced some changes, particularly with the addition of Ohio State offensive line coach Justin Frye. Frye, who is familiar with Johnson’s skills from college, has been appointed following the departure of the previous coach, Klayton Adams. “The communication, the techniques, the stuff I feel like we communication on, we’re on the same page a lot,” Johnson said about Frye.
As the NFL draft approaches, Johnson is hopeful about the selection of fellow Ohio State players, Josh Simmons and Donovan Jackson, familiar with Frye’s coaching style. The offensive line remains a priority for the Cardinals.
Johnson is also focusing on enhancing his leadership qualities within the team. Though he is often one of the youngest members, he emphasizes communication of team goals. “I’m trying to work on being able to communicate, not only on the hype side, but trying to communicate team goals,” he explained. “That’s a step I’ll have to take. The calmer version of communicating.”
Johnson’s anticipation for rejoining the team is evident. “The offseason, especially with me being hurt, felt longer than usual,” he shared. “Having that itch to get back to work and be back in the building with the guys, I’m very excited.”
