Tamra Farah, a parental rights advocate and Senior Director of MomForce, said that parents can influence local school boards by consistently attending meetings and voicing their concerns. This statement was made on the Grand Canyon Times Podcast.

“I think it always makes a difference to show up,” said Farah. “There is public pressure through it. Even if half of the board doesn’t agree with you at all, they know you came.”

Parental participation in Arizona school board meetings has increased significantly, often influencing debates on sensitive education policies. According to the Copper Courier, in Mesa, more than 80 parents, students, and community members spoke at a 2025 board meeting regarding a policy requiring parental notification when students identify as transgender. The majority opposed the policy, warning it could endanger vulnerable youth. This highlights the strong influence of parental voices on local school governance.

Official statewide data on school board meeting attendance is not systematically tracked; however, reports from major districts suggest strong engagement. In Mesa, over 80 speakers signed up for public comment on a single policy proposal. This level of turnout indicates rising parental mobilization around education issues. Such examples demonstrate how public participation is becoming a key driver of school governance discussions.

Arizona does not formally measure how often public comments alter school board policies, but local cases show significant influence. In Mesa, the large turnout of over 80 speakers shaped the board’s deliberations on a controversial parental notification policy. While not all comments lead to immediate policy reversals, they frequently pressure boards to amend or reconsider proposals, underscoring the power of organized public input.

Farah is an Arizona-based parental rights advocate and co-founder of a classical charter school who has been active in shaping education policy debates. Known as “Momma Bear,” she has written about the state’s Empowerment Scholarship Account program, arguing it gives parents greater flexibility in directing their children’s education. Her commentary highlights her role as both a parent and policy advocate.
