Maricopa County Library District has initiated a new parental choice pilot program at Queen Creek Library, aimed at supporting parents who wish to oversee their children’s library experiences. This program enables parents to manage their child’s access to specific books, ensuring the content aligns with family values.
Chairman Thomas Galvin of District 2 stated, “This innovative program provides families with a tool to manage their child’s access to specific books, ensuring content reflects their family’s values and preferences.” He expressed satisfaction that Maricopa County has found a way to respect each family’s unique needs without limiting others’ choices.
The pilot offers features similar to parental controls on digital devices, allowing parents to specify which book titles they do not want their children accessing. These restrictions will be applied directly to the child’s library account.
Supervisor Mark Stewart from District 1 commented on the initiative: “We’re focused on fulfilling the mission of the county library—to provide access and services that enhance residents’ quality of life. That’s why this program is a common-sense initiative that establishes guardrails to protect children—similar to a movie rating system.”
Queen Creek Mayor Julia Wheatley expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with MCLD: “We are excited to partner with the Maricopa County Library District… We appreciate the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors for listening… and we’re grateful… for creating a program that empowers parents.” She noted it as beneficial for local families.
The pilot requires parents or legal guardians with linked accounts to visit Queen Creek Library in person and fill out forms restricting access by title. However, it does not allow blocking entire categories or age levels.
Jeremy Reeder, Director of MCLD, emphasized ongoing commitment during this trial phase: “Maricopa County Library District remains committed… During this pilot, we’ll evaluate what’s working and what’s not…”
