Nick Rallis will return as the defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals after a period of uncertainty following the team’s head coaching change. Rallis, who was under contract, was informed by General Manager Monti Ossenfort that he would have an opportunity to speak with the new head coach.
During his time waiting for a decision, Rallis reflected on the past season and considered improvements for both himself and the team. “I didn’t know I was going to be here, but I was still looking at it through that lens,” Rallis said Wednesday in his first meeting with media since being retained by new head coach Mike LaFleur. “Looking at it, ‘How can I be better at my job?’”
LaFleur expressed his confidence in Rallis’s abilities and noted that he did not expect Rallis to be available for the role when considering candidates a year ago. “(We had) honest and open dialogue and I like what I heard,” LaFleur said. “This guy, he’s a stud and his best days are totally in front of him.”
Rallis and LaFleur have experience competing against each other, having faced off six times over three seasons while LaFleur worked as offensive coordinator for the Rams. In particular, LaFleur recalled a 41-10 loss to the Cardinals in 2024 as significant: “one of the more embarrassing losses I’ve ever been a part of.” He also referenced another close game where his offense struggled against Rallis’s defense.
Despite these past successes, the Cardinals finished 27th in yards allowed and 29th in points allowed last season. Rallis acknowledged there were many factors involved: “There are a lot of variables.” He emphasized ongoing changes but did not provide specifics.
Rallis is working closely with Ossenfort on player development efforts, making adjustments to training plans both on and off the field to support young defensive players drafted over recent seasons.
He also sees value in working alongside an offensive-minded coach like LaFleur: “Mike’s knowledge of the offenses that exist in this division… getting his perspective on that and what gives those offenses issues, that is going to lead to a lot of growth for me,” Rallis said.
LaFleur interviewed multiple candidates before deciding to retain Rallis. The decision followed discussions about lessons learned from last season’s challenges. “There are a lot of learning lessons the back half of that year,” LaFleur said. “I like what I heard and how we are going to improve from there, and he’s too good of a coach and too smart to not to be able to improve.”
Rallis expressed gratitude for another opportunity: “It means a lot,” he said. “Because I love the players and I know we can better than what we put on tape. I’m fortunate to get another shot at that.”
The Arizona Cardinals play their home games in Glendale, Arizona, serving fans throughout the greater Phoenix area according to their official website.
