House Speaker Steve Montenegro has criticized Governor Katie Hobbs for her recent decision to halt action on legislative bills. In a statement, Montenegro accused Hobbs of using the bills as leverage due to disagreements over budget issues.

Montenegro said, “Governor Hobbs’ decision to hold every bill hostage because she didn’t get her way on a blank check is not leadership—it’s political blackmail.” He further claimed that the governor expanded the DDD program without securing legislative approval or funding, leading to what he described as a crisis.

The speaker emphasized that House Republicans are working on legislation to fund the DDD program fully. He criticized Governor Hobbs for allegedly seeking “no oversight, no reforms, and no accountability” in addressing financial issues related to the program.

Montenegro urged Governor Hobbs to engage in discussions rather than issuing partisan statements and threats. He concluded by stating that until such engagement occurs, “she’s the one playing political games—at the expense of every Arizonan waiting for her to do her job.”

Steve Montenegro represents Legislative District 29 in Arizona’s West Valley areas of Goodyear and Surprise. He serves as Speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives.
