Michael Carter has returned to a leading role in the Arizona Cardinals’ backfield after starting the season on the practice squad. Initially positioned behind James Conner, Trey Benson, Emari Demercado, and Bam Knight, Carter now finds himself as the team’s primary running back.
Throughout the season, four different players have started at running back for the Cardinals. Of those listed at the start of the year, only Demercado has not started a game. Despite beginning low on the depth chart, Carter is close to becoming Arizona’s leading rusher this season if he gains 49 more yards in the next game. Currently, Demercado leads him by 21 yards; however, Carter played significantly more snaps last weekend with a 53-7 advantage over Demercado.
Carter acknowledged earlier this year that he was willing to do whatever it took to remain in professional football. “I’m not really built for a desk job,” he said at that time.
Now reflecting on his current situation, Carter stated: “I think my perspective has changed. Every week, we all have roles to play. I just want to do my best to play my role. I’ve been having some pretty good games the last month, and I just want to put myself in the position where my mind is clear.”
Last week against Houston’s top-ranked defense, Carter rushed for 56 yards on 14 carries and caught four passes for an additional 38 yards. He also contributed key blocking plays typically handled by Demercado.
Arizona Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon praised Carter’s performance and attitude: “His effort was through the roof not just when he had the ball, but when he didn’t have the ball. A couple snaps come to my mind. Blocking guys way down away from the line of scrimmage, I thought was awesome. He loves to play football. Ever since he walked in the door when we got him from New York, he’s had a smile on his face, wants to play football, loves to practice and prepares the right way. I know we can count on him.”
Carter noted that while he previously felt frustration about his career path in football, his outlook has shifted: “Having more gratitude for the moment I am in is the difference,” Carter said.
