Maricopa County officials, in partnership with the City of Goodyear and developer Dominium, marked the grand opening of Suncrest Vista at Canyon Trails, a new rental community designed for senior residents.
“This community reflects the Board’s commitment to providing affordable housing for seniors,” said Supervisor Steve Gallardo, District 5. “Suncrest Vista at Canyon Trails offers seniors a supportive, enriching community where they can remain in their communities, live comfortably, and receive the support they deserve. This development is an important step in meeting this need, particularly at a time when many seniors are facing unprecedented challenges with rising living costs.”
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors allocated $2 million from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds for the construction of 10 units reserved for households earning at or below 50 percent of the Area Median Income.
Located near Loop 303 in the Southwest Valley, Suncrest Vista at Canyon Trails provides one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments. The site includes amenities such as a beauty salon, theater room, and community garden. Residents have access to nearby retail stores and essential services in Goodyear.
Eligibility for residency requires that at least one household member be aged 55 or older; all other members must be at least 40 years old. The county has invested over $128 million of ARPA funds into housing programs and projects. More information is available at Maricopa.gov/Housing.
Recent data show ongoing challenges in education within Maricopa County: during the 2022-23 school year, more than half of students failed key sections of standardized tests. For example, 62.9% of students in grades 3 through 8 did not pass the mathematics section of the AASA exam (https://www.azed.gov/), while only about a third passed these assessments during the following academic year (https://www.azed.gov/). These statistics reflect broader issues facing families across income levels in the region.
