Maricopa County is initiating a comprehensive update of its Zoning Ordinance, the first major revision in decades. The ordinance serves as the primary regulatory framework for development projects in the county, establishing zoning districts and regulating their uses. This update aims to simplify the ordinance’s language and format while addressing housing and regulatory reforms that align with community needs.
“Modernizing our zoning ordinance will facilitate greater housing options where it makes sense while still protecting the integrity of our communities,” said Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Chairman Thomas Galvin, District 2. “I look forward to a transparent and collaborative process that involves the entire development community.”
The objectives of this update include modernizing the ordinance’s format with visuals and user-friendly information, clarifying language, considering current practices in regulations, implementing consensus recommendations from public input, and addressing housing flexibility and affordability challenges.
Community involvement is emphasized as essential to ensure diverse perspectives are considered. Residents, landowners, business owners, agencies, and members of the development community are encouraged to participate in stakeholder meetings scheduled for June 5 and August 28. More details on these meetings can be found at Maricopa.gov/ZoningUpdate.
