Mack Wilson Sr., linebacker for the Arizona Cardinals, hosted a celebrity basketball game at Tempe Corona del Sol High School on May 16 as he prepares to return to football after recovering from a rib injury that ended his previous season early.
The event brought together teammates and local supporters, raising funds for Make a Difference Foundation and Fostering Champions. These organizations support youth through mentorship, sports programs, and aid foster youth transitioning out of care.
Wilson spoke about the challenges he faced after his injury: “I was in a dark place for sure. Rib fracture, punctured lung, was in the hospital for three days, tube in my chest. It was tough for me, coming out of the hospital, having to sleep sitting (expletive) upright for three weeks.” He added that missing games was difficult but also an opportunity: “It was a learning experience, a humbling experience. But I took a backseat and I was able to reevaluate my career and my life in general. Remember why I do it. I have some hunger in me and feel this year is going to be one of the best years of my career.”
The basketball game featured several Cardinals players including Will Johnson, Budda Baker, Denzel Burke, Jordan Burch, Rabbit Taylor-Demerson, Sean Murphy-Bunting and Michael Wilson among others. Wide receiver Kendrick Bourne performed at halftime while defensive linemen Walter Nolen III and Dante Stills attended as spectators.
Teammate Cody Simon said about Wilson: “He’s a Mr. Do-it-all… This event speaks to how he’s there for everybody… We definitely missed him in the room last year. This is a big year for him.” Head coach Mike LaFleur described Wilson as “made of the right stuff,” recalling that when he got hired by owner Michael Bidwill and GM Monti Ossenfort it was Wilson who first reached out saying: “Hey coach… I’m your green dot.”
The Arizona Cardinals are recognized as one of the oldest continuously operating professional football franchises in the United States; they play home games in Glendale serving greater Phoenix as part of the NFC West division according to their official website.
With organized team activities set to begin soon under new leadership from Coach LaFleur—and with players like Walter Nolen III expressing confidence about returning from injuries—the focus now shifts back onto preparing for next season.
