Kyler Murray will not play for the remainder of the 2025 season, Arizona Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon announced Friday. Murray has been on Injured Reserve since suffering a foot injury in Week 5. Despite initial hopes for his return, further medical evaluations led to the decision to shut him down for the year.

“He wasn’t progressing in a way that we wanted, so we went and got a different opinion, some different people, and (the foot) is just not right,” Gannon said.

Jacoby Brissett has started at quarterback since Week 6 in Murray’s absence.

Gannon did not comment on whether Murray would remain the team’s starting quarterback next season. “I’m worried about the Rams right now, honestly” he said.

Murray appeared in only five games this season, his lowest in any year of his career. He completed 110 of 161 passes for 962 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions, resulting in a passer rating of 88.6. He also rushed for 173 yards on 29 carries and scored one touchdown.

Murray has not addressed the media since after the Week 5 game against the Titans. He missed three games before being placed on IR. During that period there was optimism about his possible return. On Thursday, he posted an image on social media showing himself with James Conner, Marvin Harrison Jr., and Michael Wilson during an offseason workout with the caption “Weird Year” and wrote “Never again.”

Wide receiver Michael Wilson commented on Murray’s absence: “Kyler puts in a lot of work and is a valuable piece to this team and this organization,” Wilson said. “Him not being to able to be back in the saddle is a tough blow because I know for him and for us, we had a lot of expectations and high hopes and conversations prior to this year about what we could accomplish as a team.

“They paid him as a franchise guy and he’s shown he can be that guy, and so I do feel deeply for him.”

The Cardinals are also facing additional injuries ahead of Sunday’s game against the Rams. Rookie wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., who sustained a heel injury last week, will not play. Running back Trey Benson remains on IR with a knee injury; Gannon indicated it is unclear if Benson will return this season. Other players ruled out include wide receiver Greg Dortch (chest) and defensive tackle Walter Nolen III (knee).

Addressing how injuries have impacted the roster decisions each week, Gannon stated: “That’s the job,” Gannon said about the injuries. “I appreciate the staff, because I am the one who tells them, ‘Here’s who is up, here’s who is down, this is what you’re going to have.’ And there is no negativity, there is no ‘poor little old me’ … there is none of that. Because that’s the job.

“You have to figure it out. Our job is to have solutions and be a part of the solution, not part of the problem.”
