In May 2025, Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) will celebrate the achievements of its graduating Honors students, highlighting their academic and personal successes. Among these graduates is Jeremy Walk, a first-generation college student and single parent who has found transformation through his time at PVCC.
Walk is set to graduate with an Associate of Applied Science in Social Work. Reflecting on his journey, he shared that attending PVCC was about more than just earning a degree. “I’ve been an online student, and PVCC’s Honors Program has been instrumental in enriching my learning experience,” Walk said. He emphasized the value of collaborating with professors on Honors projects, which allowed him to explore topics deeply and engage in scholarly work he had not previously imagined.
The Honors Program provided Walk with more than academic opportunities; it instilled a renewed sense of purpose and self-worth. “Honors gave me a reason to aim higher and dig deeper,” he explained. It opened doors to scholarships, enhanced his presentation and research skills, and instilled a profound sense of pride.
This accomplishment is evident in Walk’s future plans. He was recently awarded the All-Arizona Academic Team scholarship through Phi Theta Kappa, facilitating his transfer this fall to Arizona State University’s Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions. There, he will pursue both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Social Work through an accelerated program. As part of his achievements as a PVCC Honors student, he also gained automatic acceptance into ASU’s Barrett Honors College.
Walk encourages prospective students considering PVCC’s Honors Program: “Do it. Honors is a fantastic way to stand out in your field of interest.” He advises planning courses wisely, building relationships with professors, and aligning projects with one’s major for maximum benefit.
His motivation throughout this journey has been his children. “As a single parent, my goals aren’t just for me,” Walk said. He aims to demonstrate perseverance and hard work to his kids through his accomplishments in the Honors Program.
