Grand Canyon University’s track and field team began its outdoor season at the Cody McBride Invitational in Phoenix, according to a March 21 announcement. The meet marked the team’s first outdoor competition following its inaugural indoor season in the Mountain West.

The opening of the outdoor season is significant for Grand Canyon Antelopes athletes as they transition from indoor events and seek to build on their previous performances. The team competes in NCAA Division I events, according to the official website.

Senior Germain Lemaitre was among the standout performers, winning the men’s 800-meter run with a time of 1 minute, 49.44 seconds after finishing third at the Mountain West Indoor Championships. In hurdles, graduate Amanda Thrue secured first place in the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.31 seconds. Graduate Jagger Zlotoff also claimed victory in the men’s 5,000 meters, finishing in 14:38.91 after reaching the one-mile final during indoor competition.

The Lopes continued their success in field events as junior Weston Means won the high jump, while freshmen Kailani Forbes and Jade Williams took first place in long jump and triple jump respectively. Junior Harrison Cornell and freshman Juliana Garcia each won their respective discus throw competitions.

The Grand Canyon Antelopes contribute to athletic traditions and support student-athletes balancing academics and competition, according to the official website. The program participates as an intercollegiate athletics program under NCAA Division I rules within the Western Athletic Conference, offering opportunities for competition, development, and academic success for student-athletes based at Grand Canyon University.

After this successful start to their outdoor campaign, Grand Canyon’s track and field team will compete next at the Carvel Jackson Memorial Track and Field Showcase on March 28 at Mesa Community College.
