The Grand Canyon University track and field teams are set to compete in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships from Thursday to Saturday in Arlington, Texas. The men’s team is aiming for a fifth consecutive outdoor WAC title, having secured 10 WAC titles since 2016 across both men’s and women’s programs. Meanwhile, the women’s team seeks its first outdoor championship win since 2021.
Grand Canyon University aims to maintain its strong performance in events such as the men’s 110m hurdles, where athletes hold the season’s top four fastest times. In the women’s 400m race, GCU runners possess the top two fastest times.
Head coach Tom Flood expressed confidence in his team’s abilities: “We are very excited and confident in both of our teams’ abilities to have very successful WAC Outdoor Championship meets again this year.” He highlighted that multiple school records have been broken this season as they prepare to defend their title.
Flood emphasized the importance of teamwork: “Both teams are very well balanced, and we will look to a great group of seniors to lead the way and for some very talented newcomers to make a lot of noise.”
According to the WAC Pre-Championship Coaches Poll, GCU’s men’s team is predicted to finish at the top, while the women’s team is expected to be among the top three. Flood acknowledged the competitiveness of the conference: “The WAC is a very competitive track and field conference. Both of our teams know that no one is going to hand them anything and that they are going to have to fight for every point they get.”
The championships will take place at Maverick Stadium, with live broadcasts on ESPN+ starting at 3 p.m. Phoenix time on Thursday, and at 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
