The Grand Canyon University men’s track and field team won its first outdoor meet title of the season at the UNLV Rebel ELITE, according to an April 6 announcement. The event took place in Las Vegas, where a group focused on sprints and hurdles represented GCU.
This result highlights the Antelopes’ ongoing efforts in NCAA Division I athletics, providing student-athletes with opportunities for competition and development, as described by the official website. The team competes as part of Grand Canyon University’s intercollegiate athletics program and participates in events under NCAA Division I rules within the Western Athletic Conference.
Senior athletes Miguel Rosario and Justin Raines led strong performances for GCU’s men’s squad. Rosario finished first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.36 seconds, followed closely by Raines at 20.48 seconds. This time is currently ranked as the fastest in both the Mountain West region and NCAA West Region this season. In addition, Raines placed second (10.24) while Rosario took third (10.25) in the 100-meter dash.
The men’s relay teams also contributed to GCU’s success; their 4×400 relay team won with a time of three minutes, 11.69 seconds.
On the women’s side, sophomore runners Nina Thevenin and Cassie Small achieved top-five finishes in their respective events; Thevenin placed fourth with a time of 23.52 seconds—currently second-fastest in Mountain West—while Small was just behind her at 23.53 seconds.
In field events, graduate Taryn Burkett set a new school record by winning the triple jump with a mark of thirteen meters (42 feet, eight inches). Freshman Kailani Forbes established a freshman record for GCU by jumping twelve point seventeen meters (39 feet, eleven inches).
According to the official website, Grand Canyon Antelopes are based at Grand Canyon University and support student-athletes as they balance academics alongside athletic competition.
Looking ahead, GCU will compete next Friday at Azusa’s Bryan Clay Multi before participating at Glendale Community College on Saturday.
