Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell has announced the sentencing of Shannon Smith, born in November 1976, for identity theft. Smith was found guilty of impersonating a woman to amass hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills using the victim’s identity.
Smith entered a guilty plea to four counts of Aggravated Taking Identity of Another, classified as a Class Three Felony, and one count of Taking the Identity of Another, classified as a Class Four Felony. Her sentence includes 8.5 years in prison and an order to pay restitution.
From September 2022 to March 2024, Smith used the victim’s name and personal details to receive medical services across The Valley. She obtained services from multiple hospitals and ambulance providers fraudulently, resulting in nearly $300,000 in charges.
The victim discovered her identity had been compromised upon receiving an unexpected bill from her insurance company for unrequested services. She continues to face inquiries about deductibles related to medical care provided under her name but actually received by Smith.
County Attorney Rachel Mitchell stated: “The impact of identity theft goes far beyond the financial implications. It takes away a victim’s peace of mind and leaves them to deal with the fallout of having false information tied to their name.” She commended the prosecution team’s efforts in holding Smith accountable and aiding the victim’s recovery process.
Shannon Smith is now under confinement following her sentencing.
