Dave McGinnis, who served as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals from 2000 to 2003, died Monday at the age of 74. McGinnis had a long career in football, both in coaching and broadcasting, most recently working as a radio analyst for the Tennessee Titans since 2017.

McGinnis was known for his energetic approach and strong relationships with players during his time with the Cardinals. His overall record with the team was 17-40, but he remained popular among players and fans for his straightforward analysis and personal touch. “We were deeply saddened to learn of Dave McGinnis’ passing and extend our heartfelt condolences to all who knew and loved him,” Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill said in a statement. “As Dave often said, he was a ‘ballcoach’ through and through, and no one ever filled that role with more passion, enthusiasm, and charisma.

“Coach Mac truly loved the game and everything — and everyone — associated with it, especially his players. He was one of a kind and will be greatly missed.” Bidwill said.

McGinnis joined the Cardinals as defensive coordinator in 1996 before taking over as interim head coach during the 2000 season after Vince Tobin’s departure. He officially became head coach prior to that season’s final game. One notable moment from his tenure came in his last game when quarterback Josh McCown threw a touchdown pass to Nate Poole that eliminated the Minnesota Vikings from playoff contention.

Before joining Arizona, McGinnis spent ten years coaching linebackers for the Chicago Bears. After leaving Arizona following the end of the 2003 season, he worked as an assistant coach for both the Tennessee Titans (2004-2011) and St. Louis Rams (2012-2016), later moving into broadcasting.

The Arizona Cardinals are recognized as the oldest continuously operating professional football franchise in America according to their official website. The team serves the greater Phoenix area in Arizona where they host home games in Glendale. The franchise is part of the NFC West division, having captured an NFC championship in 2008. More information about their history can be found on their official website.

McGinnis played key roles throughout significant moments in franchise history including helping lead efforts related to Prop 302 which resulted in State Farm Stadium being built—allowing relocation from Sun Devil Stadium—and serving as spokesperson when Pat Tillman announced plans to join the Army.
