Denzel Burke, a recent draft pick by the Arizona Cardinals, is preparing for his debut season in the NFL. As a fifth-round cornerback from Ohio State, Burke’s selection surprised some due to the Cardinals’ existing depth at the position. However, General Manager Monti Ossenfort saw potential in adding more talent to their defensive lineup.
Burke has strong ties to Arizona, having grown up in areas such as west Phoenix and Tempe. His high school coach at Scottsdale Saguaro High School, Jason Mohns, praised him as a “true football player” despite not having standout physical attributes.
Now back home after winning a national championship with Ohio State in January, Burke is getting ready for the challenges of professional football. He will share living arrangements with fellow draftee Will Johnson during the offseason program. Johnson was picked in the second round and is expected to have significant playing time.
Head Coach Jonathan Gannon acknowledges that both players will face a learning curve transitioning from college to the NFL level. “This is the best of the best,” Gannon said about competing in the league.
Cody Simon, another Ohio State teammate drafted by the Cardinals as a linebacker, described Burke as a “crazy competitor.” He noted Burke’s ability to perform well under pressure and adapt after challenging games.
Burke remains optimistic about his future with the Cardinals while recalling his early days watching them play at State Farm Stadium. Now on their roster, he faces logistical challenges like accommodating ticket requests from friends and family eager to see him play.
