Banner Health announced on March 20 that Dale Johns, FACHE, has been appointed chief executive officer of Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, Banner Behavioral Health Hospital in Scottsdale, and Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center facilities in Gilbert and Sun City.

The appointment comes as Banner Thunderbird continues to expand its services for families in the West Valley. The health system is currently building a six-story Women’s and Infant Services tower, renovating the pediatric emergency room, and adding surgical suites. These projects reflect Banner Health’s ongoing commitment to reinvesting in the communities it serves through its nonprofit activities, according to the official website.

John Groesbeck, senior vice president of acute care delivery for Banner Health, said, “Dale Johns is bringing incredible experience to Banner Health. His expertise will be key with the exciting growth in the West Valley and address expanding community needs for mental health care.”

Johns brings 22 years of hospital leadership experience to his new role at the 595-bed facility. He succeeds Debbie Flores, who retired earlier this year after more than three decades in health care leadership roles at Banner. Johns has previously held positions with health systems in California, Pennsylvania, Utah, and Florida. He holds a bachelor’s degree in health administration from Weber State University and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Utah. He began his career as a radiology technician in the U.S. Army Reserves and is a veteran of Desert Shield/Storm.

Banner Health operates across several states including Arizona, California, Colorado, Nebraska, Nevada, and Wyoming according to the official website. The organization ranks among the largest nonprofit health systems nationally and aims to simplify health care to improve quality of life as stated on its official website. As a nonprofit organization functioning across multiple states such as Arizona and others listed above according to its official website, Banner Health provided $1 billion worth of community benefits in 2024.

Looking ahead, Johns will oversee ongoing expansions at Banner Thunderbird while supporting integrated care efforts throughout affiliated facilities.
