Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari has recently addressed concerns about immigration enforcement and accountability following the death of a detainee in Arizona. In a series of posts on March 13, 2026, Ansari highlighted ongoing issues related to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities and her efforts to seek transparency.
In an early morning post, Ansari wrote: “As Trump continues to push his hateful mass deportation agenda and as ICE continues to terrorize our communities, it’s more important than ever that you know your rights. If you missed my ‘Know Your Rights’ tele-town hall with @ACLUaz, you can listen to it at my Facebook page.” (March 13, 2026)
Later that day, she called for further investigation into the death of Emmanuel Clifford Damas while in ICE custody at the Florence Detention Center in Arizona. Ansari stated: “There must be real accountability for the killing of Emmanuel Clifford Damas while under ICE custody at the Florence Detention Center in Arizona. I joined the AZ Democratic delegation in urging @DHSgov for Damas’ complete medical examiner’s report, details about his” (March 13, 2026).
She also announced plans to visit the facility herself: “I’m on my way to the Florence Correctional Center in Arizona. This is my fifth ICE oversight visit. I’ll be demanding answers about the recent death of Haitian asylum seeker Emmanuel Clifford Damas. I’ll report back soon.” (March 13, 2026).
Ansari’s statements come amid broader debates over immigration policy and detention practices in the United States. She was elected to Congress after defeating Jeff Zink in the 2024 general election by a significant margin—winning approximately 71% of the vote.
