Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari, who represents Arizona and won her seat in the 2024 general election against Jeff Zink with 70.9% of the vote, recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing issues related to democracy, political retribution, and the January 6th Capitol attack.
On January 5, 2026, Ansari commented on actions taken against Senator Mark Kelly, stating: “This is vindictive political retribution. For over 25 years, @SenMarkKelly defended our country and our freedoms—including the First Amendment. Punishing a veteran to silence political speech is authoritarian. Trump and Hegseth have never been more un-American.”
The following day, marking the fifth anniversary of the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol, she reflected on its impact: “On the fifth anniversary of the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol, we are reminded that democracy survives only if we defend it. January 6th was an assault on our Constitution, driven by lies and led by Donald Trump. As Trump continues to defy the rule of law and undermine” (posted January 6, 2026).
Later that same day, Ansari addressed her own staff’s experience during the Capitol riot: “January 6 was a violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. It was meant to terrify and intimidate the people who work here—including my Chief, @sarahghermay. Instead of breaking her, it clarified her purpose.
‘Democracy erodes when good people decide it’s no longer worth the” (posted January 6, 2026).
Ansari’s public remarks come amid ongoing national debates about democratic norms and accountability following recent election cycles and continued discussions about events surrounding January 6th.
In November 2024, Ansari secured her congressional seat after defeating Jeff Zink with a significant margin—winning approximately seventy-one percent of votes compared to Zink’s twenty-seven percent.
