Arizona Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur said on Apr. 6 that he values production over style when evaluating running backs James Conner and Tyler Allgeier, who have similar playing styles. LaFleur explained that both players are considered smart, tough, and strong leaders in the locker room.
The decision to focus on production comes as the team continues to build its roster ahead of the upcoming season. “What I have learned about backs, they come in all shapes and sizes, but are they producing? Both those guys are smart, they are tough, they are great leaders for the locker room. … They are similar but they have both produced,” LaFleur said.
LaFleur noted that Trey Benson brings a different skill set to the team but must still prove his ability to contribute effectively. The coach also addressed questions about offensive line needs at this stage of preparation. He said he is satisfied with recent additions through free agency such as Isaac Seumalo and Elijah Wilkinson for starting roles and Matt Pryor and Oli Udoh for depth purposes. “You don’t have to go reach in the draft,” LaFleur said. “Now, if there is a guy where we can improve our roster, tackle, guard, whatever it is … but on paper, you have a bunch of veterans who have played this game at a high level. They know how to play.”
The Arizona Cardinals play their home games in Glendale and serve the greater Phoenix area according to their official website. The franchise stands as the oldest continuously operating professional football team in the United States according to their official website.
As part of the National Football Conference West division according to their official website, the Cardinals captured an NFC championship in 2008 according to their official website.
Looking ahead, tackle remains a likely draft target for Arizona either early or later during selections. With Conner and Allgeier leading alongside Benson’s potential contributions next season after 2025 approaches, LaFleur indicated that all three could be needed as circumstances evolve.
