The Arizona Cardinals have added kicker Joshua Karty to their active roster, giving the team two kickers with two games left in the season. Karty was signed from the Los Angeles Rams’ practice squad, where he played eight games this year. He joins Chad Ryland, who has struggled recently, missing six field goals over the last six games.

Karty previously made 10 of 15 field goals and 23 of 26 extra points for the Rams before being released late last month in favor of Harrison Mevis. The Rams later brought him back to their practice squad. In his rookie season in 2024, Karty converted 29 of 34 field goals, including six from at least 50 yards.

Ryland has made all 32 extra-point attempts this season but has only converted on 23 of his 31 field goal tries—a decrease from his performance last year when he went 28-for-32. On Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, Ryland made four out of six field goal attempts.

Ryland addressed his recent misses after Sunday’s game: “Every kick I’m surprised (if I miss). You’ve been around me long enough to know me and my mental state in terms of how I approach my job each day. (Sunday) wasn’t good enough no matter how you cut it. Every time I go out there I expect to make it.

“That’s what comes with being a kicker in the NFL. You have good days and bad days, but you make the conscious decision to have the right mindset, and rock and roll.”

According to overthecap.com, Ryland is set to become a restricted free agent after this season.

Special teams coordinator Jeff Rodgers commented on Ryland’s professionalism: “It’s disappointing when it doesn’t happen for whatever reason – operation, protection, kicker, whatever,” Rodgers said. “(The Falcons game) did start off well … there were positives and negatives. I try to not focus too much on results and being consistent on technique, process, reps. I thought last Thursday was one of (Chad’s) better days striking the ball. On game day, we’ve got to be able to make those kicks, and we have to be good around him as well.”

In addition to signing Karty, Arizona also added cornerback Kalen King from the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad. King was a seventh-round pick by Green Bay in 2024 and has appeared in one NFL game so far.

Defensive lineman Walter Nolen III (knee) and cornerback Garrett Williams (Achilles) were placed on injured reserve following announcements by head coach Jonathan Gannon earlier this week.

The Cardinals currently have one open spot remaining on their roster.
