Michael Wilson, wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals, is close to reaching a significant milestone as the team prepares for its final game of the season against the Los Angeles Rams. Wilson needs 93 more yards to achieve his first 1,000-yard season. Despite challenges and injuries that have affected the roster, Wilson remains determined to finish strong.
“Every time I step on the field, I’m going to make sure I give 150 percent and especially this last game, I especially want to end the season on a high note,” Wilson said. “Because I don’t want to go into the offseason thinking like, ‘Damn, I completely didn’t take the last game seriously.’ It’s just going to leave a bad taste in my mouth.”
Wilson’s performance improved significantly after Jacoby Brissett became quarterback. In Weeks 1-5, he had eight receptions for 52 yards; since then, he has made 65 catches for 855 yards. Reflecting on his progress this year despite early setbacks and opportunities arising from teammates’ injuries—including Marvin Harrison Jr.’s absence—Wilson commented: “I think it would be a heck of an achievement to get (1,000), not only for myself, but for my family, and especially just how I started. To get this close, I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t a goal that I wanted to accomplish.”
Coach Jonathan Gannon emphasized what motivates his players as they approach Week 18: “The Arizona Cardinal name on your chest and name on your back,” Gannon said. “They have fun playing football. I told them today (that) ‘Two weeks from now you’re going to be watching these games, and all these emotions are going to come up and they’re not going to be good emotions.’ I know that. That’s how I feel. I know that’s how they’ll feel, so maximize the opportunity to go play a game.”
Quarterback Jacoby Brissett noted differences between this team’s focus compared with others he has played for late in losing seasons.
The Cardinals currently hold the fifth pick in the upcoming NFL Draft behind teams such as the Raiders (2-14), Giants (3-13), Jets (3-13), and Titans (3-13).
Gannon also addressed questions about changes likely coming in the offseason: he said their main focus is enjoying their time together as a group one last time.
Wilson echoed those sentiments about pride and professionalism: “Nothing is guaranteed in the NFL,” Wilson said. “It’s a privilege and an honor to wear the Cardinals uniform, to wear any uniform. This tape is going to be evaluated by all by 32 teams in the NFL. You would be foolish to go out there and not give it 120 percent.”
In roster moves ahead of Sunday’s matchup with Los Angeles following Marvin Harrison Jr.’s placement on injured reserve Friday, wide receiver Tejhaun Palmer was promoted from practice squad status while Steven Sims (wide receiver) and Jaden Davis (cornerback) were elevated from practice squad positions as well.
