Trey Benson, the Arizona Cardinals’ second-year running back, has been placed on Injured Reserve after sustaining a knee injury during the team’s recent game against the Seattle Seahawks. Head coach Jonathan Gannon announced Wednesday that Benson will be sidelined for at least four games but is expected to return later this season. According to Gannon, Benson played through the injury last Thursday and only reported discomfort on Friday morning. ESPN has reported that Benson underwent arthroscopic surgery.
“It’s tough to lose (anyone),” said quarterback Kyler Murray. “He’ll be back. I have full faith in the running backs room.”
The Cardinals’ running back lineup continues to change following James Conner’s season-ending foot injury earlier this year. Michael Carter was promoted from the practice squad to the active roster earlier this week and joins Emari Demercado and Bam Knight among available backs. When asked whether Demercado or Carter would start, Gannon responded, “we’ll see how the week goes.”
“Everyone has to do their job,” Gannon added. “I’m real comfortable with the guys who are assuming the role.”
In further roster moves, veteran D’Ernest Johnson was signed to the practice squad Monday, while Jermar Jefferson joined on Wednesday.
On defense, lineman Darius Robinson is currently not practicing due to a chest injury; his status will be monitored as he recovers.
Additionally, cornerback Jaden Davis—Arizona’s 2024 seventh-round pick—was re-signed to the practice squad Wednesday as cornerback Ekow Boye-Doe was released from it. Offensive lineman Jake Curhan was signed away from Arizona’s practice squad by the Carolina Panthers.
