Joey Blount, a key member of the Arizona Cardinals’ special teams and this season’s captain, will miss the rest of the year after being placed on Injured Reserve due to a neck injury sustained during the season opener against the New Orleans Saints.
Coach Jonathan Gannon commented on the impact of Blount’s absence, stating, “His roles on game day will have to be absorbed by multiple people.”
To address the roster change, wide receiver Simi Fehoko has been promoted from the practice squad to take Blount’s spot on the 53-man roster. Fehoko is recognized for his contributions on special teams and was considered a strong candidate for the main roster following his preseason performance. He is expected to help fill gaps left by Blount.
The Cardinals filled Fehoko’s former place on the practice squad by signing linebacker Channing Tindall. Tindall was selected in the third round of the 2022 draft by Miami and played three seasons with the Dolphins before being released in August.
Gannon also provided updates on other team injuries from the opener, describing them as “bumps and bruises.” Linebacker Cody Simon suffered a concussion during the same play that injured Blount when both players tackled a Saints return man. Simon’s status remains uncertain.
