The Arizona Cardinals have placed wide receiver Greg Dortch on Injured Reserve due to a chest injury, the team announced Saturday. In response, Trent Sherfield Sr. has been elevated from the practice squad and is set to play his first game for the Cardinals since departing as a free agent after the 2020 season.

“Coming here was a blessing in a lot of different ways,” Sherfield said. “I needed to be here.” Sherfield had recently been released by the Denver Broncos in mid-November before rejoining Arizona.

Dortch’s move to IR likely ends his season, although there remains a possibility he could return for the final game. He was ranked sixth among return men in last week’s initial Pro Bowl vote tally. This season, Dortch recorded 29 receptions for 206 yards and three touchdowns, along with one rushing touchdown. He also averaged a career-best 11.6 yards per punt return and 26.2 yards per kickoff return.

The Cardinals are also contending with other injuries at wide receiver. Marvin Harrison Jr. is sidelined with a heel injury, Zay Jones remains on IR with an Achilles issue, and Xavier Weaver is expected to miss Sunday’s game against the Rams due to a hamstring problem. Michael Wilson will lead the receiving corps on Sunday, supported by tight end Trey McBride and Andre Baccellia; Jalen Brooks has also been promoted from the practice squad.

Channing Tindall has taken Dortch’s spot on the active roster as linebacker.

Starting left guard Evan Brown was added to the injury report Saturday for personal reasons and is now listed as questionable for Sunday’s matchup.

Wilson has stepped up in previous games as WR1, recording 25 catches for 303 yards over two games when Harrison was absent. Last week, with Harrison returning after recovering from appendicitis, Wilson had three receptions.

“We are a better football team with (Marvin) out there,” Wilson said. “Maybe I might get a few more targets, but I’m treating this game like it was Week 1.”

Sherfield reflected on his earlier time with Arizona: his best season came during his rookie year in 2018 when he tallied 19 catches for 210 yards and one touchdown. He later achieved career highs in Miami during the 2022 season with 30 receptions for 417 yards. Sherfield nearly rejoined Arizona in 2023 when Jonathan Gannon became head coach but signed with Buffalo instead before ultimately returning two years later.

“It’ll be surreal to be back out there,” Sherfield said.

Additionally, State Farm Stadium’s roof will be open for Sunday’s contest between Arizona and Los Angeles—the second time this season following its opening against San Francisco—amid forecasted temperatures around 70 degrees at kickoff.
