Mack Wilson Sr., also known as Rocketship, is making waves both on and off the field. The Arizona Cardinals linebacker recently showcased his musical talents with the release of a rap song titled “18 Bars,” marking a unique way for an NFL team to announce its schedule using platforms like Apple Music and Spotify. This initiative highlights Wilson’s growing interest in music alongside his football career.
Wilson’s journey into music began casually, freestyling at home or among friends. His collaboration with former teammates Jesse Luketa and Zach Pascal helped him explore this passion further. With encouragement from his brother Orlando Fike, also known as Lando Lo, Wilson ventured into recording tracks.
The Cardinals supported Wilson’s musical endeavor by enlisting Bighead Music Group to produce and mix songs like “18 Bars,” “1of1,” and “A to Z.” The production involved experienced professionals who have worked with notable artists such as Kodak Black and Flo Rida.
Reflecting on the experience, Wilson described it as surreal. He spent two days balancing football commitments with shooting scenes for the music video at the Dignity Health Training Center. The project involved extensive collaboration with producers Tye Beats (Tye Marcus Gibson) and co-lyricist Yung Viz (Tylon Freeman), resulting in a productive creative process.
Teammates played supporting roles in the video, contributing to a collective effort that underscored camaraderie within the team. Despite initial nerves, Wilson found confidence in his ability to rap professionally.
Wilson’s nickname Rocketship emerged after joining the Cardinals, inspired by their logo resembling a rocket emoji. While initially met with skepticism from friends, it eventually caught on among teammates and coaches.
As he continues to refine his style, Wilson aims for broader appeal by reducing profanity in his lyrics. His latest releases reflect this evolution while maintaining energy that resonates with listeners.
Looking ahead to the 2025 season, Wilson remains focused on both football and fostering team unity through music. He hopes these songs will serve as anthems for what promises to be an exciting year for the Cardinals.
