The Arizona Cardinals were unable to mount a comeback in their recent game against the San Francisco 49ers, falling short despite several notable plays and individual performances. Running back Bam Knight appeared to score on a 60-yard touchdown run, but the play was nullified due to a holding penalty on tight end Pharoah Brown. The penalty erased what could have been a momentum-shifting moment for the Cardinals.

Cardinals analyst A.Q. Shipley commented during the broadcast that Brown was simply finishing a block and did not believe it should have been called as a penalty. Brown himself disagreed with the call after the game. Had the touchdown stood, it would have brought the score closer at 25-17.

Other missed opportunities included Elijah Higgins losing a fumble just short of scoring and an incomplete deep pass from Jacoby Brissett to Michael Wilson. Brissett emphasized the need for continued effort in addressing mistakes, while defensive lineman Calais Campbell spoke about maintaining high standards each week. Head coach Jonathan Gannon took responsibility for the team’s issues, stating, “I’m the head coach and I am obviously not doing a good enough job right now.”

Wide receiver Michael Wilson had a standout performance with 15 catches, though such numbers are often seen when teams are trailing significantly. Quarterback Jacoby Brissett set an NFL record with 47 completions in a single game, surpassing previous marks held by Jared Goff and Drew Bledsoe during regular season play. Despite this achievement, Brissett downplayed its significance: “I promise you I can’t care less” about his passing statistics.

Left tackle Paris Johnson Jr. praised Brissett’s determination: “It’s guys like that, they’re going to fight through the entire game to try to pull us back in the game… we’re going to continue to follow him, because he’s choosing to make that decision each and every drive.”

Tight end Trey McBride caught a touchdown pass for his fifth consecutive game, becoming the first Cardinals tight end to do so since 1967. He also extended his streak of games with at least five receptions to twelve; another such performance would tie Larry Fitzgerald’s franchise record.

Isaiah Adams replaced Will Hernandez at right guard for four series during the game. Linebacker BJ Ojulari made his return after missing time since last season and recorded an unofficial sack on Brock Purdy during a two-point conversion attempt.

Special teams saw mixed results: Greg Dortch contributed with a 40-yard punt return, Kitan Crawford blocked an extra point, but lapses allowed both long kickoff returns and negated field goal blocks due to penalties.

Penalties were a significant issue throughout the contest, with Arizona committing 17 infractions—a new franchise record. When asked about them postgame, Brissett said: “I’ve been in the league 10 years and I don’t know the words where you don’t get fined, so I’ll just ignore that and not even comment.”

McBride received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for making a gesture banned by the league earlier this year due to its perceived gang associations.

Looking ahead, Brissett described fixing ongoing problems as persistent work: “However you have to clean it up… It’s like a stain… you’ve got to figure something out. It’s the mindset of not quitting on the process and not quitting on idea that we can clean it up.”
