The Arizona Cardinals, guided by General Manager Monti Ossenfort and Coach Jonathan Gannon, are eyeing trench warfare as the NFL draft approaches. With previous first-round picks like offensive lineman Paris Johnson Jr. and defensive lineman Darius Robinson, the Cardinals have made their approach to roster building clear. This aligns with the NFL’s recent focus, showcased by the Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl strategy.

Coach Gannon remarked, “I would say ever since I got into the business, it’s been O-line and D-line,” emphasizing the importance placed on these positions. This offseason, the Cardinals enhanced their defensive line, adding players such as Dalvin Tomlinson and Calais Campbell alongside returnees Bilal Nichols, Justin Jones, and young prospects like Dante Stills.

The offensive line remains an area for potential reinforcement, particularly with guard depth and considering tackle Jonah Williams’ contract status. Several prospects, including Texas tackle Kelvin Banks Jr., Oklahoma guard Tyler Booker, and Ohio State tackle Josh Simmons, are under consideration for the Cardinals’ first-round pick.

On the defensive side, potential options at the 16th pick include players like Kenneth Grant, Walter Nolen, and Derrick Harmon for the line, and Mykel Williams, Mike Green, and James Pierce for edge positions. Gannon noted, “What’s cool about putting together a D-line room is (that) each guy has a little bit different role.”

Ossenfort recognizes the fluidity of team needs, stating, “I learned a long time ago that what is perceived as a need or maybe not as a need one year and fast forward three, four or five months later or a year later, all of a sudden it is a need.”

The Cardinals are aware of other strategic areas like cornerbacks and wide receivers, but at this point, the focus remains on the trenches.
