Senior athlete Cam Wilmington has secured a spot in the NCAA Championships following his performance in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA West First Round. Competing in College Station, Texas, Wilmington achieved a time of 50.12 seconds, finishing 12th among competitors and earning one of the top 12 spots needed to advance to Eugene.

Wilmington’s journey included advancing from an initial round of 48 entries to Friday’s round of 24. In a competitive field where only the top three from each heat automatically moved forward, Wilmington finished fourth in his heat. However, he managed to secure one of the best times for non-automatic qualifiers.

Wilmington makes history as Grand Canyon University’s first male track athlete to reach the NCAA Championships at the Division I level. He is set to compete in the semifinal round on June 11 at Hayward Field.

Other GCU athletes faced challenges during Friday’s events. The men’s 4×100-meter relay team placed 18th with a time of 40.04 seconds. Junior Miguel Rosario III ran a personal best of 20.59 seconds but ended up in 17th place for the 200 meters. Graduate Daviciea McCartney was unable to finish strongly due to an injury during his final hurdle jump in the same event as Wilmington.

The men’s 4×400-meter relay team narrowly missed out on qualification, securing a time of three minutes and six-point seventy-seven seconds for a fourteenth-place finish.

Thursday’s preliminary rounds saw no advancements from GCU’s women athletes. Senior Lucy George did not record any marks in javelin throwing, while junior Amanda Thrue came last with her performance in hurdles after being added late into competition ranks.

In other women’s events, senior Aaliyah Rifort-Delem concluded her season ranked thirty-sixth by completing four hundred meters within fifty-three point ninety-two seconds while teammate Taliyah Booker finished slightly behind closing just under fifty-five second mark

Jazmine Scott remains as GCU’s sole competitor heading into Saturday’s triple jump scheduled at twelve-thirty Phoenix time
