Banner Health has introduced a new artificial intelligence (AI) system to improve the diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy, a major cause of vision loss among people with diabetes. The LumineticsCore device, now in use at 24 Banner Health centers and clinics in Phoenix and Tucson, allows for rapid testing during routine primary care visits.

Diabetic retinopathy affects a significant portion of those living with diabetes, with nearly three-quarters developing some form of the condition within two decades after diagnosis. Early detection is critical because the disease can progress without noticeable symptoms until it threatens vision.

The AI-powered LumineticsCore device captures images of patients’ retinas and provides diagnostic reports within minutes. This process removes the need for remote exam reviews by specialists and reduces delays associated with referrals and waiting for results.

“This device is helping to make the health care journey a much more seamless experience for our diabetic patients,” said Dr. Jason Leubner, a Banner Health family medicine physician. “We’re excited to be able to eliminate some of the extra steps and frustration that could come with the former diagnostic process and ultimately improve patient care by being able to diagnose people earlier.”

According to eye health experts, annual eye exams are recommended for all individuals diagnosed with diabetes due to their increased risk for retinal diseases.

The LumineticsCore system is noted as the first FDA-cleared fully autonomous AI diagnostic tool capable of detecting disease without physician interpretation.
