U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in Phoenix the recent arrest of Calixto Mendez-Gomez, a criminal illegal alien from Guatemala, convicted of solicitation to commit human smuggling in Maricopa County.

The arrest was announced by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in a press release listing illegal alien arrests across the country, even as the federal government is in the midst of a “shutdown.”

“During the Democrats’ government shutdown, our ICE law enforcement officers are working without pay to arrest pedophiles, human smugglers, and other violent criminals from our streets,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “We will not let the government shutdown slow us down from making America safe again. Our law enforcement officers are working around the clock to arrest and remove heinous criminals from our country.”

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is a federal law enforcement agency under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. It enforces immigration laws, investigates customs violations, and works to prevent crimes such as human trafficking and drug smuggling.

The ICE Phoenix field office oversees enforcement operations in Arizona. Its officers carry out arrests, removals, and investigations in coordination with federal, state, and local partners.
