State Representative Justin Wilmeth has proposed a constitutional measure, House Concurrent Resolution 2005, to set a firm adjournment date for the Arizona Legislature. The resolution mandates that regular legislative sessions conclude by April 30 each year. Currently, sessions are expected to finish within 100 days of starting, but they often extend into late spring and early summer.
Wilmeth emphasized the need for discipline in legislative processes, stating, “Arizona does not have a full-time Legislature, and it was never meant to operate like one.” He added that an April 30 adjournment would ensure timely budget decisions and respect the part-time nature of legislative service.
The resolution allows the Governor to call special sessions limited to specific subjects. If approved by the Legislature, HCR 2005 will appear on the next general election ballot for voter consideration. Wilmeth represents Legislative District 2 in North Phoenix and chairs the House Committee on Artificial Intelligence & Innovation. He was elected in 2022, succeeding Daniel Hernández Jr. More details about Rep. Wilmeth can be found on his X profile at @JustinWilmethAZ.
