Joseph Torkildson, MD, a pediatric oncologist at Banner Children’s at Desert in Phoenix, was recognized with a state legislative proclamation for his years of service treating children with cancer and complex neurological diseases. The honor was presented by Arizona Representative Walt Blackman during a ceremony on the House of Representatives lawn before Tuesday’s legislative session, which also included the observance of Arizona Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day.
“As legislators, we fight for families, and few fights are tougher than watching your child face cancer,” said Blackman, who represents Legislative District 7. “Arizona Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day is a public reminder that these kids and parents are not alone. We honor Dr. Joseph Torkildson because he showed up for decades when families needed someone steady, skilled, and relentless in their corner. We should match that same level of seriousness with awareness, support, and action that helps kids get the care they deserve.”
The proclamation highlights Dr. Torkildson’s extensive career in pediatric oncology, hematology, and neuro-oncology as well as his more than 40 years serving as a U.S. Navy physician. It also notes his leadership roles in advancing clinical programs and expanding access to precision medicine and clinical trials for children throughout Arizona and the western United States. Dr. Torkildson serves as a clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of Arizona College of Medicine.
The document states: “Dr. Torkildson has demonstrated an enduring commitment to medical education, research, mentorship, and community service, leaving a lasting impact on generations of physicians and patients.”
Dr. Torkildson received his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1982 and completed his fellowship in pediatric hematology-oncology at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles in 1990.
Banner Health operates as one of the largest nonprofit health systems in the country according to its official website. The organization provides significant community benefits through its nonprofit initiatives and maintains facilities across several states, including Arizona where Dr. Torkildson practices.
