State Representative Justin Wilmeth’s proposal to establish a firm adjournment deadline for Arizona’s legislative sessions has advanced through the House Government Committee. The legislation, known as House Concurrent Resolution 2005, seeks to constitutionally mandate that the Arizona Legislature adjourn sine die by April 30 each year. This measure aims to address frequent session extensions that have prolonged regular sessions and delayed budget finalization.

HCR 2005 allows for special sessions when necessary but restricts them to specific subjects outlined in the call. Representative Wilmeth emphasized the importance of accountability and discipline, stating, “Arizonans expect the Legislature to do its job, pass a budget, and finish its work on time.” He referenced President Ronald Reagan’s motto, “It CAN be done,” as inspiration for completing legislative work by April 30.

If HCR 2005 gains full legislative approval, it will appear on the next general election ballot for voter consideration. Wilmeth was elected in 2022 to represent Arizona’s 2nd House District in North Phoenix. He serves as Chairman of the House Committee on Artificial Intelligence & Innovation.
