The Arizona Cardinals announced on Apr. 24 the selection of running back Jeremiyah Love in the draft, as General Manager Monti Ossenfort addressed questions about the team’s approach to key positions and ongoing contract discussions with quarterback Jacoby Brissett.
The decision to draft Love comes as the Cardinals look to improve their offensive performance after struggling with injuries in both the offensive line and running back groups last season. The team was able to throw effectively with Brissett but found it difficult to run the ball. Ossenfort said, “We talked about the position. (We) understand all of that.” He added that taking Love was not done without careful consideration: “But to think the Cardinals took Love without drilling down on all the pros and cons, that’s just disingenuous. Not with the kind of money that Love will earn. They believe this is the first step in a leap forward on offense.”
Ossenfort also addressed reports regarding Brissett’s absence from voluntary workouts and his potential desire for a contract upgrade, saying, “Both Mike and I have had good dialogue with Jacoby. Obviously, this is the voluntary portion of everything. We’ll continue to have conversations with Jacoby, but things are in a good spot.” The team has not yet named a starting quarterback for 2026 between Brissett or Gardner Minshew.
Looking ahead in the draft, Ossenfort faces decisions about defensive players or offensive linemen for upcoming picks. NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah lists several defensive backs, linebackers, edge rushers, a defensive lineman and a wide receiver among top prospects still available.
Love is expected to arrive soon in Arizona for his press conference scheduled Friday morning.
