Mike LaFleur is preparing for his first free agency period as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. Together with General Manager Monti Ossenfort, he will look to reshape the roster after a disappointing 2025 season. Owner Michael Bidwill has called for a quick turnaround.
The Cardinals struggled on offense last year, particularly in the running game. James Conner suffered a serious right foot injury in Week 3, and Trey Benson was sidelined with a knee injury the following week and did not return for the rest of the season. Without a consistent rushing attack, Arizona often played from behind and relied heavily on passing plays. Michael Carter led the team in rushing yards with just 333.
Decisions loom about which players will carry the ball next season. The team did not extend an offer to Emari Demercado, allowing him to enter free agency. Conner, who turns 31 in May, is also part of discussions regarding his future with the team. Carter, who previously played under LaFleur and Nathaniel Hackett with the Jets, commented on LaFleur’s hiring: “guy is cut from the right cloth man.” Carter is currently a free agent.
Several other running backs are set to become free agents when the league year starts Wednesday and could fill gaps in Arizona’s roster. Additionally, some draft analysts have speculated that Jeremiyah Love may be considered by Arizona with their third overall pick.
Notable previous free agent running back signings by Arizona include Conner (2021), Chris Johnson (2015), Rashard Mendenhall (2013), Edgerrin James (2006), Emmitt Smith (2003), and Mario Bates (1998).
The Cardinals play their home games in Glendale, Arizona and serve the greater Phoenix area according to their official website. They compete in the NFC West division and are recognized as the oldest continuously operating professional football franchise in the United States.
