Ann Hampton Callaway is returning to Arizona to honor Linda Ronstadt with a musical tribute at Symphony Hall in Phoenix. Callaway, a Tony Award-nominee with a global singing career, is set to perform in a program celebrating the achievements of Ronstadt, a legendary Arizona vocalist.
“Ann Hampton Callaway: The Linda Ronstadt Songbook” will feature three performances at The Phoenix Symphony in May. The program includes Ronstadt’s popular songs such as “Blue Bayou,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “You’re No Good,” “Poor, Poor Pitiful Me,” “What’s New,” and “Am I Blue.”
Callaway expressed her admiration for Ronstadt, stating, “She really just basically did the kind of music that she wanted to do and most of it came from her childhood,” highlighting Ronstadt’s diverse musical pursuits despite industry pressures. Ronstadt’s family deeply roots in Arizona, with streets and music venues in Tucson carrying their names.
Linda Ronstadt gained prominence in the 1970s across country, rock and roll, and Latin music genres, earning 11 Grammy Awards. She announced her retirement in 2011 due to her inability to sing, stemming from progressive supranuclear palsy, initially misdiagnosed as Parkinson’s disease.
