The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, commonly known as the SAVE Act, sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune, urging him to bring the SAVE America Act, which requires proof of citizenship for voter registration and photo ID for federal elections, to the Senate floor for a vote.

Merissa Caldwell of the Alliance for Better Elections – A Strong Communities Foundation Initiative in Phoenix, AZ, was one of the voters who advocated for the SAVE Act and stronger election integrity measures.

According to a coalition letter, signed by leaders from more than 80 conservative organizations, praised Thune’s co-sponsorship of the SAVE America Act but warned that using immediate cloture could mask efforts to block the bill. It urged him to take advantage of the bill’s privileged status, which requires only 51 votes to advance, and prioritize it over other measures to enforce voter citizenship verification, photo ID requirements, and updated voter rolls.

Polling data shows broad public support for such requirements. According to Pew Research Center polling, 83% of Americans support requiring government-issued photo ID to vote, including 95% of Republicans and 71% of Democrats. Gallup polling similarly finds 84% nationwide favor photo ID requirements and 83% support proof of citizenship for first-time voter registration, indicating broad public backing for measures aimed at election security.

President Donald Trump championed the SAVE America Act in his State of the Union address, describing it as country-saving legislation to combat rampant election cheating through strict voter ID laws and citizenship proofs, calling on Senate Majority Leader John Thune to swiftly pass this unifying bill to restore faith in the electoral process.

The Election Integrity Network, founded by Cleta Mitchell, organizes grassroots efforts among conservative leaders to promote accurate voter rolls and prevent election fraud. It coordinates coalitions like the one behind the letter to Thune and focuses on state-level initiatives and policy advocacy for citizenship verification and ID requirements according to its website.

Merissa Caldwell is affiliated with the Alliance for Better Elections, an initiative of the Strong Communities Foundation in Phoenix, Arizona. She focuses on promoting accessible and secure voting processes to strengthen community participation in elections. As a Phoenix resident, her work emphasizes building trust in electoral systems through education and advocacy.
